I recently learned that I'm receiving 12 weeks off of my sentence, courtesy of a memo signed by CDCR Secretary Ralph Diaz. Like everyone else, I was ecstatic about the possibility of getting out even one day early, particularly in the middle of the COVID 19 crisis ripping through the prison system. Armed with my newfound knowledge, in the form of the memo I'd temporarily removed from the bulletin board, I approached my counselor to ask him for additional information, namely, when would I see these credits applied to my sentence. His response was predictable, mainly because it's a standard response given to every question I've ever asked: "I don't know." Let him tell it, he didn't even know about the memo, but how could that possibly be? He's a CDCR counselor, it's his JOB to know this, it's his job to help us prepare for going back into society, but clearly he's operating under a different job description than that circulated to the general public.
